Liebig arranged for Will to be given an Assistant Professorship at Giessen in order to ensure that he could not take the London post, while at the same time arranging for his pupil, A. W. Hofmann, to accept the Royal College of Chemistry Directorship. See Will to Warington, Giessen, undated (1845), Lawes-Gilbert papers, file G. 108, Rothamsted Experimental Station, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, AL5 2LQ, U.K. There is an excellent calendar of these papers: Margaret Harcourt Williams, Catalogue of the Rothamsted Archives (Harpenden, 1987).

  • Gmelin's project began as Handbuch der theoretischen Chemie Frankfurt 1817–1819 2 vols second edition 1821–1822; third edition 1827–1829, The fourth, enlarged edition, entitled Handbuch der Chemie, was published at Heidelberg between 1843 and 1866, and occupied nine volumes. This was completed by a team of German editors who simultaneously worked on a fifth edition begun by Gmelin in the year of his death and completed in thirteen volumes in 1870. Interestingly, this edition incorporated material from the Cavendish Society's English edition.
  • Will had previously published an account of the Liebig-Giessen method of analysis Anletitung zur qualitativen Analyse Heidelberg 1846 translated as Outlines of the Course of Qualitative Analysis Followed in the Giessen Laboratory (London, 1846).
