  • This statement, in Rutherford's handwriting, is reproduced in facsimile in Howorth Muriel Pioneer Research on the Atom: The Life Story of Frederick Soddy London 1958 319 319 [Hereafter Pioneer]. Soddy left Mrs Howorth his papers and correspondence (now in the Bodleian Library, Oxford) and made her his literary executrix. Her enthusiasm and partiality for Soddy are not matched by scientific knowledge. The ordering of the material is such as frequently to cause frustration, and the indexing is indifferent, but the volume is extremely rich in its contents. Letters and other papers from Soddy's contemporaries are generously quoted. One learns, for instance, that in 1901, Soddy and Rutherford each applied for chairs in the U.K., Soddy at Aberystwyth and Rutherford at Edinburgh. Both chairs went to men senior in years. Rutherford's reference for Soddy's application for the chair at Aberdeen is also given (p. 192).

  • Paneth , O. Pioneer 125 – 125 . Those interested in this aspect of Soddy's record will note from their quoted statements in Pioneer that among the keenest defenders of Soddy's status are the notable figures in atomic studies, Hahn, von Hevesy, and Paneth. Their views of Soddy's personality also differ from that of several British, especially Oxford, colleagues and from Rutherford's.

  • Personal communication from Sir Charles Frank, FRS, Bristol. Sir Charles remembers clearly Soddy showing a ‘Wankel’ model to a group of students, and himself recalls much of the not-so-simple constructional detail. Other indications of Soddy's strong streak of originality can be noted. There are two papers in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London 1942 178 377 377 182A (1943), 113, on the summation of infinite series; five letters in Nature (1936, 1937) on multiplicities of touching (kissing) circles, a number of the results being expressed in verse form; eight patents are listed in Pioneer; in his eightieth year Soddy designed a mechanical means for solving cubic equations.
