Pages 117-125 | Published online: 02 Jan 2013

References

  • Dodd , C. H. 1952 . According to the Scriptures (London).
  • Rendel Harris , J. 1916 . Testimonies i,; vol. ii, 1920. In both cases (Matt. 19.4, Mark 10.6) the emphasis lies on the words ‘male and female created He them’, and not on the idea of creation in the image of God.
  • 1956 . Novum Testamentum Graece 22nd ed.
  • 1947 . Eranos Jahrbuch xv Zürich 1948, 158, quoting BRUNNER, Der Mensch im Widerspruch (Berlin 1937) 519 (ET Man in Revolt London 1942, 499).
  • op. cit. 159 f.
  • 1947 . Jesu Son of Man (London) 193 n. 3; cf. already LIGHTFOOT, Colossians (London 1875) 211.
  • 1958 . The literature on the subject is enormous, and no attempt has been made to provide a complete documentation. The primary purpose of this article is to collect the material which may serve as the basis for further study, not to elaborate a theory or construct a doctrine. References will be found in the relevant articles in the works of BAUER and KITTEL. ELTESTER'S study Eικών im Neuen Testament (Beiheft 23, zur ZNTW, Berlin,) was unfortunately not available in the preparation of this article.
  • 1957 . Studia Patristica Cf. i (Berlin) 420 ff.
  • Adv. Haer. See for example v. 6.1, 16.1 (HARVEY). According to BRUNNER (Man in Revolt 504) the distinction springs from Valentinian Gnosticism, although in IRENAEUS it is otherwise interpreted.

  • Rev. 9. 7 (of the shapes of the locusts).
  • Rom. 5.14 (of those ‘who have not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression’). But see further below.
  • 1932 . Romans (Moffatt Commentary, London) 120; cf. TAYLOR, The Person of Christ (London 1958) 39 f (quoted below).
  • For a survey of the views of various commentators on this passage, see TAYLOR op. cit. 62 ff.
  • Wörterbuch See for example the references in BAUER, s.v. εìκών
  • Rev. 13. 16, 17; 14. 9, 11; 16. 2, 19. 20, 20, 4. Reference to note11) above will show that all these cases occur in proximity to cases of εìκών. The implication suggested in the text of this article may therefore deserve consideration.
  • The Epistle to the Romans op. cit. 39 f., quoting SANDAY and HEADLAM, (ICC) 193. 27) Rom. 3. 23.
  • Imago Cf. however BRUNNER op. cit. 501: ‘The presupposition of this new doctrine of the—that is, the doctrine of the New Testament—in contrast to that of the Old Testament, is the following: the fact that man has been created in the Image of God has been lost, that it must be renewed in man’.
  • Cf. for example 2 Cor. 3.18, 4.6.
  • Strom. VII. 16. 6, on which STÄHLIN (GCS ad loc.) refers to PLATO Rep. X, 597 E, and VÖLKER (Der wahre Gnostiker (TU 57) 111 n. 3) to PHILO.
  • It may however be pertinent to ask whether, when Paul speaks of himself as a τúπoς, or when Timothy and Titus are urged to present themselves as τúπoι (cf. 1 Peter 5. 3), there is not perhaps a Christological reference in the background. If so, these passages might also become relevant.
  • Cf. also 2 Cor. 4.16, εì καì ó ἔξω ήμῶν ἄνθρωπoς διαφθεíρεται, ἀλλ' ó ἔσω ήμῶν ἀνακαινoῦται, and Rom. 12.2 (already quoted).
  • op. cit. 96: ‘Man's meaning and his intrinsic worth do not reside in himself, but in the One who stands ‘over against’ him, in Christ, the Primal Image, in the Word of God’.
  • But cf. BRUNNER op. cit. 501: ‘In this connection Cremer rightly points also to the passages in the New Testament where sonship to God is spoken of as likeness to God, of the ‘imitation’ of God, of ‘being holy as he is holy’.’ SCHMIDT (op. cit. 190) refers to John 6. 15, ‘welche Aussage Jesus Christus als die imago Dei verdeutlicht’.
  • 1913 . Die Gottebenbildlichkeit des Menschen in der urchristlichen Literatur der ersten zwei Jahrhunderte op. cit. 503, referring to STRUKER
  • Manson . 1943 . Jesus the Messiah Cf. (London) 188f.
  • Imago But cf. BRUNNER op. cit. 500: “The man”, whether a Christian or not, is the bearer of the “the image and glory of God” (1 Cor)—and for that reason man should never be cursed (Jas)'.
  • 1953 . The Image of God in Man Cf. CAIRNS, (London) 32 ff., who distinguishes three senses: the concept is used i) to describe Christ's dignity and sonship; ii) to describe the likeness to God into which believers enter through faith in Christ; iii) to describe man's humanity. For CAIRNS the third sense is marginal and the second is the central one. It should be added that the second sense “describes Christ's perfect humanity, in which by faith men can share, and in which they hope to be perfected” (ib. 35). Otherwise the summary quoted is misleading.

  • Rom. 8.3, Phil. 2. 7.
