NOTES

  • Julio A. Pérez Celada, Documentación del monasterio de San Zoilo de Carrión, 1047–1300 (Burgos: Ediciones J. M. Garrido Garrido, 1986), document 84. This undated document is assigned to the year 1220 by its editor, but is likely to be nearer to 1228, the year when the dispute was ended by an agreement published by Pérez Celada as document 93, and also by Teresa Abajo Martín, Documentación de la catedral de Patencia, 1035–1247 (Burgos: Ediciones J. M. Garrido Garrido, 1986), as document 174. Henceforth references to document 84 will be made as page references within the text of this article.
  • Julio Gonzälez, El reino de Castilla en la época de Alfonso VIII, 3 vols. (Madrid: CSIC, 1960), 1, 910–18.
  • Pérez Celada, doc. 1 records the donation of the church of San Fagundo of Arconada to the convent of San Zoilo by Count Gómez Díaz in 1047. Although a forgery, it is presumably either a product or a cause of the tradition here expressed by Martín Domínguez.
  • The best edition of the records of this lawsuit, usually called the Ordinatio Ecclesiae Valentinae, is contained in H. Sanchis Sivera, La diócesis valentina, 2 vols. (Valencia: La Voz Valenciana, 1922), II, 191–412; the testimony of witnesses in this suit will henceforth be referred to according to the pages of this edition. The best study of the suit is in Robert I. Burns, The Crusader Kingdom of Valencia, 2 vols. (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard U. P., 1967), I, 253–81.

  • Peter Linehan, The Spanish Church and the Papacy in the Thirteenth Century (Cambridge: Cambridge U. P., 1971), esp. 322–34. Pedro Ruiz de Azagra was the independent ruler of Albarracín from about 1170 until his death in 1186.
  • Coyanza had had this name since at least 905, as seen in A. Floriano Cumbreño, Diplomática española del período astur, 718–910, 2 vols. (Oviedo: Instituto de Estudios Asturianos, 1949), doc. 175; and it was renamed Valencia at some date between 1189 and 1194, as shown by Julio González, Alfonso IX, 2 vols. (Madrid: CSIC, 1944), docs. 30, 82. It is unclear why the name was disliked by the inhabitants. Did it derive from coleones through coyones plus the suffix-anza? (A suggestion I owe to Dr R. H. P. Wright.) Or from coxones plus-anza?
