  • Hale , S. J. 1990 . Mary had a little lamb , New York : Scholastic. This is a new version of an old rhyme, illustrated with photographs. In this version, Mary is an African American girl with glasses .
  • Herron , C. 1997 . Nappy hair , New York : Alfred A. Knopf. The . book is written in the traditional African American call-and-response format. It celebrates, with wit and sensitivity, a little girl who has “nappy hair.”
  • Hudson , C. W. and Ford , B. G. 1990 . Bright eyes, brown skin , New York : Scholastic. This is a great book for preschoolers, and includes beautiful illustrations .

  • Tabor , N. M. 1995 . Somos un arco iris: We are a rainbow. Each page of this book, written in both Spanish and English, describes how people are all alike. Children will find the collage illustrations very engaging
