The Future of the Junior CollegeFootnote

Pages 427-435 | Published online: 30 Jan 2008

  • I have deducted the foreign and territorial institutions from the totals published in the Directory.
  • It should be pointed out these figures are not a wholly accurate index of the actual growth of junior colleges. The Junior College Directory reports many a junior college some years after its establishment—but comparative data are given in terms of the year the institution was first listed in the Directory. Someone should make a tabulation by date of founding, although unless the institution is established de novo as a junior college, and many are not, the setting of a date which is meaningful and consistent may prove almost impossible. It should be realized also that the figures of both the Office of Education and the Association do not represent the actual growth of junior colleges in terms of new institutions, but rather figures on net growth. That is, losses of junior colleges through closings or expansions upward have been taken into account.
  • This includes one proprietary business school, one of a dozen accredited by Texas as business junior colleges, and hence included in the statistics. They are omitted by the Office of Education. I question the justification for their inclusion in the Directory and American Junior Colleges.
