- It May be noted that some of the new administrators have gone so far as to develop or at least to espouse a rationale and apologia for the authoritarian exercise of power. See, for example: A. R. Rogow and H. D. Lasswell , Power, Corruption and Rectitude ( New York : Prentice-Hall , 1963 ).
- We shall discuss later in this paper the way in which the new administrators make use of the distinction between determination of policy and implementation of policy to maintain the duality of professed beliefs and actual practices.
- Interestingly enough a number of the new administrators actually have a genuine interest in the development of individual faculty members. They seem to feel that they are helping the faculty members to see reality more clearly and to become more effective people. The difficulty is that they fail to see the importance of self-determination in all of this; much as parents often want the best for their children, but can not tolerate autonomous development in their loved offSpring. Similar too, is the concern of the communist Chinese thought-reform expert, who often has a genuine benevolent interest in his captive, and who hopes that his revelation will soon be shared .
