  • A description of the educational system has been given in a recent Australian publication, the figures differing slightly from mine. See W. F. Connell , F. H. Christie , P. W. Jones , R. Lawson , eds., China at School ( Sydney : Ian Novak , 1974 ). The figures given should be compared with 1949 estimates-Primary: 24 million; High School: 800,000; and 1950 entrants into Higher Education: 35,000. See B. M. Richman, Industrial Society in Communist China (New York: Random House, 1969), Chapter 3. Comparisons with pre-liberation preschool provision is impossible due to lack of both 1949 statistics and current figures.

  • Group life of this kind is not, of course, peculiar to China but may be seen in most peasant and village based societies. Many Africans comment that they find solitary modes of living, sleeping, eating, and working “ unnatural.
