  • We should be aware that the relation of schooling to its social and cultural world is not a uniquely American phenomenon. Although differing in their conceptions of individuality, other societies were experiencing social transformations in the 1960s that produced calls for school change. Soviet reforms of that period had content revisions and a new orientation in school instruction that reflected a sensitivity to science. Russian was the first foreign language into which Bruner's The Process of Education was translated. Zankov's late 1950s reforms of ussr elementary education stressed the cultural attitudes and orientations that are associated with scientific technological transformations of Soviet industry (see, Popkewitz, T.
