Pages 133-140 | Published online: 23 Nov 2007

  • Lecturer in Economics, University of Sussex. I would like to acknowledge assistance from the Latin America Centre of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the form of a summer research fellowship which enabled me to conduct the research on which this paper is based. Thanks are also due to the Nuffield Foundation and the School of Social Studies of the University of Sussex for assistance during the collection of the data; to the University of Chicago's Latin America Centre where I held a Post-Doctoral Fellowship while revising the paper; and to Michael Lipton, Paul Rayment, Peter O'Brien, Al M. Mansour, and members of the University of Chicago Latin America Workshop for comments on an earlier version. Responsibility for the final form of the paper lies with the author alone.
