Note: Eder’s detailed and comprehensive history of photography is an adequate and convenient source of reference in the conventional history of photography for the purposes of the present paper. An English translation of the text by Edward Epstean was published as The History of Photography by the Columbia University Press, 1945. Unfortunately it has none of the many illustrations of persons, objects and documents that so greatly enrich the original.

- Litchfield, R. B., Tom Wedgwood, Duckworth and Co., London, 1903, p. 185ff. Note: Litchfield found no reference to photographic experiments among Wedgwood’s letters. It never occurred to the young Davy or to Wedgwood that their photographic technique, as reported in 1802 to the Royal Institution, could have an application much wider than the recording of the images projected by the solar microscope, or the copying of paintings that had been made on glass. Given the pottery industry of his family, and had he perceived a need, it would have been natural for Thomas Wedgwood to have tried to apply photography to facilitate the decoration of pottery. But he did not consider this before his premature death in 1805.
- Mac Curdy, E., Editor and translator, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, Jonathan Cape, London 1938. Leonardo’s notes cover a vast range of topics, treating each with deep insight. There are many notes on optics. A reading of these notebooks can hardly fail to suggest that had Leonardo felt a need for catching the image of the camera obscura, he would have discussed the desirability if not the possibility of doing that.
