  • 1745 . This, I make no doubt, is the great Admiral Vernon of Porto Bello fame. After his fatal quarrel with the Admiralty in, he continued in the House of Commons to exert himself on behalf of all seafaring men, and was certainly a member of the Select Committee on the Fisheries in 1749–50
  • General James Edward Oglethorpe (1698–1785), soldier, colonist of Georgia, and friend of the poor: a name to add prestige to any committee whose aims were professedly philanthropic
