Shirreff, R.N., dated May 14th, mentioning the beating of the United States in sailing by the English brig Harlequin. He says: “The Americans say— the United States is the fastest ship ever built in America.” An amusing case of “leg pulling.”
  • Macedonian The accompanying sketch from the draught of the shows why she measured more by the American method than by the British. Her measurements from the draught were: length on the lower deck, 154 ft. o in.; breadth, extreme, 39 ft. 5 in.; breadth, moulded, 38 ft. 9 in.; depth in hold, 13 ft. 6 in.In sloops, brigs, etc., the length by American and British measurement was theoretically the same
