The GREENWICH PORTRAIT of SIR FRANCIS DRAKE

Pages 359-362 | Published online: 22 Mar 2013

References

  • Like the Hondius engraving the Greenwich portrait gives Drake the same facial adornment (or blemish) which he shared in common with Cicero and Cromwell
  • That the ship-crest was adopted by the Drake baronets is well shown by the Obrisset snuff-boxes produced in 1712. There are examples in the British Museum and R.U.S.I
