  • 1781 . The Barham Papers , 1 See, 356 for Kempenfelt's meeting with Guichen's convoy on December 12th,. After this meeting, Kempenfelt sent the fireship Tisiphone, commanded by James Saumarez, to Hood, telling him he thought that 9 French line of battleships were destined for the West Indies. The real number was 5; and in consequence of Kempenfelt's action and of a gale of wind on Christmas Day, only two of them continued their voyage. However welcome Kempenfelt's squadron might have been to Hood, its going to the West Indies would have embarrassed things at home; for Kempenfelt had with him nearly every ship of the main fleet that was not refitting against the next year's service, including two out of our three Ist-rates and four 90-gun ships. Rodney was about to return to his station, but his ships were not ready to leave England till the middle of January 1782
