  • 1519 . Fernão de Magalhaes, Elementos de Estudo 130 – 52 . Núm. 100, Real cedula con las instrucciones dadas à Magallanes y Faleiro para su viaje y descubrimiento, Barcelona, 8 de maio de, Arch, de Ind. 41. 6, 2/25. I copy the paragraphs from Affonso Dornellas' Abril 1930. These Instructions are also reproduced in the Colección de los Viajes y Descubrimientos que hicieron por mar los Españoles desde fines del siglo XV, etc. by Martín Fernàndez de Navarrete, Book IV (Imprenta Nacional, Madrid 1837), pp., chapter XIV. However, Navarrete's transcription is in modernized Spanish, while that of Dornellas is said to be the original orthography. Yet, on comparing the two transcriptions, I was not a little surprised to find they were at variance in several places: verbs or words written differently; words, part of and even whole phrases left out in the Dornellas transcription. On referring the matter to the author he pointed out to me that his transcription had been made direct from the genuine document. This I certainly do not doubt; still I think the copyist—whoever he may have been—must have misread the text now and again and skipped lines. Be it as it may, I think that in the present contribution I have fairly reconstituted the original wording (putting here and there a comma or semicolon to render the text more comprehensible), while preserving the old spelling
  • Faleiro did not accompany Magellan, having been taken ill
  • Navarrete writes sus salvas.
  • ó. Navarrete writes
  • Navarrete writes traerd.
  • é. Navarrete writes
  • Navarrete writes nuestro Señor no quiera.
  • Navarrete writes tovierdes.
  • Navarrete writes habeis.
  • I italicise for the purpose of comparison with Cabral's Instructions, quod vide.
  • Pigafetta, Relation du Premier Voyage autour du Monde par Magellan 33 – 4 . Jean Denucé, 1519–1522. Édition du texte français d'après les Manuscrits de Paris et de Cheltenham, pp. As the text is in old French, I have deemed proper translating same. Of course, Pigafetta's book has been translated into English, viz. for instance, M. J. M. Robertson, Magellan's Voyage round the World by Antonio Pigafetta, etc., 3 vols., Cleveland (Ohio)
