  • 17 Nov. 1787 . 17 Nov. , The error—1788 for 1787—is academic only (a) because the relevant Order only appeared on, and (b) because a longish ‘grace’ period in which old uniform articles might still be worn was invariably allowed by Authority. It is more than likely that young Martin did not even hear of the change until 1788

  • 1860 . Ratings' buttons are all there, though not so labelled. The last horizontal row of Pl. 4, labelled ‘Petty Officer’, is correct for the Rating also from to 1923. From the latter date to the present day he has continued to wear the black horn button of 1901, sharing it still with petty officers of up to one year's service (Pl. 4, D 4).The exception is the Master. He was an Executive Officer, and wore several distinctive buttons between 1807 and 1832. But he was, so far as buttons are concerned, more closely associated with the ‘Departmental Officers’, under which heading his buttons will be shown
