  • 1946 . Journals and Narratives of the Third Dutch War 3 – 47 . This was to have been followed by monographs on the Four Days Fight and St James's Fight (1666), on which he was actively engaged at the time of his death. The outstanding English contributions in this field are all by R. C. Anderson, (Navy Records Society, Vol. LXXXVI,; Naval Miscellany, Vol. iv (N.R.S., 1928), pp.; Journal of the first Earl of Sandwich 1659–1665 (N.R.S., 1929), XLVII–LXXI; Journals of Sir Thomas Allin 1660–1678, Vol. II (N.R.S., 1940), pp. xvi–xxxv
  • Calendar of ancient records of Dublin 550 – 76 . There was a flourishing Dutch commercial community at Dublin in the first three decades of the seventeenth century, and ‘Mr Wiborn’ may be identical with one of the two Dutch merchants named Wybrants mentioned in J. P. Gilbert, Vol. III (Dublin, 1892), pp. passim.

It should be noted that although Piélat copied closely from Van den Bos, the English Life of 1677 is much fuller on this point and quite independent of either. The standard modern biography is by P. J. Blok, Michiel Adriansxoon de Ruyter (The Hague, 1928), of which there is a drastically abridged English translation by G. J. Renier

  • The only definite date that can be attached to De Ruyter's movements between 1618 and 1631 is that he served as a gunner in the Bergen-op-Zoom campaign of 1622
  • Brandt , G. 1687 . Leven en bedryf 987 ; Blok, M. A. de Ruyter, p. 306. I have the impression that Brandt, being a predikant, may have exaggerated De Ruyter's undoubtedly genuine piety

  • Cal. S.P. Domestic 506 An English friend of the family wrote to the Rev. Thomas Pots at Flushing on the 11 February 1673: ‘I enclose my opinion how your town might be made harmless in these times of calamity. I know you and your father-in-law, De Ruyter, have great estates, and it's more than a hazard that Holland is not gone. It, therefore, in my opinion, concerns you the more to secure what you have in Zealand by timely circumspection’ (1672–1673, p.). If this was an attempt to wean De Ruyter from his allegiance, it failed
  • Brandt , G. 1946 . Leven en bedryf 671 (1687), pp., 675. Curiously enough, almost exactly the same words were used of the Duke of York's behaviour in this battle by Captain John Narbrough. Cf. R. C. Anderson [ed.], Journals and Narratives of the Third Dutch War p. 97

  • Profit and Power 128 Sir William Coventry pointed out that as regards trade rivalry all the natural advantages—‘winds, good ports, and men’—lay with the English. The same thing was true of the strategical situation to a great extent. Cf. C. Wilson
  • Of course, some officers, such as Cosmao Kerjulien and Charles Baudin, were the equal of any British they ever met, but the foregoing is true as a broad generalization
