  • Accountant General's Department. Accounts Various. In common with every government department the Admiralty paid fees. The largest sums went to the Exchequer when drawing bills on that office. Until 1794 they amounted to £3000 annually but rose in wartime. The Admiralty commissioners paid fees to the Home Office on the issue of a new patent of Admiralty, the First Lord at the rate of £100, the other commissioners at £50 each. Smaller amounts were paid on Treasury warrants, to the Post Office for lists of packet boat sailings etc. Except for those paid to the Exchequer and for the new Admiralty patent, all such fees were paid out of the contingent expenses of the office by the chief clerk.
