  • Cotter , M. (private communication). The energy supplied by ΔT must first overcome the forces which lead to clustering and then (with the surplus left from doing this) expand the space between molecules. If there are many clusters to disperse so that most of kΔT is required to break the bonds which maintain the clusters, the fraction of energy left to expand the molecular volume is smaller. Consequently, with fewer clusters to break up, there will be more energy left over to contribute to an increase in the expansion coefficient.
