• If only steric factors are important, the number and type of gauche,-interactions determines stability. The conformation adopted involves the ether oxygen in one O — C and one O — H interaction, whereas an anti,-conformation would involve two O — H gauche,-interactions. The former conformation is thus slightly less favorable in the isolated molecule than is the latter
