- Carl Garland , W. , Gerald Kasting , B. and Kenneth Lushington , J. 1979 . Phys. Rev. Letters , 43 : 1420 It seems that simply first or second is too simple to describe these transitions. The transition entropies of the 60CB-80CB mixture and pure 80CB have been measured by Phys. Rev. B (to be published). They find that the nematic-isotropic transitions are of first order with large heat capacity anomalies but the nematic-smectic A transitions are of second order (or immeasurably close) with no transition entropy observed at all for the nematic-smectic A-re-entrant nematic transitions even though they were able to visually observe the transitions
