  • The Chirgwin-Coulson method produced negative structural weights for the ϕIF structure of F-CH3 (including initial heavy atom s-type functions) and the ϕIX structure H-CH3 (both including and not including initial heavy atom s-type functions) when the 6-31++G** basis set was used. Although the corresponding inverse overlap weights were all positive, in both cases the ϕIF and ϕIX structural weights were less than the ϕIX and ϕIH structural weights respectively. In addition, the Löwdin weights for the ionic structures of H-CH3 are opposite those obtained with the inverse overlap method when using the 6-31++G(d,p) basis set and not including the initial heavy atom s-type basis function.
