Science , 148 : 339 A twig near the top of a redwood tree in the coastal fog of early morning was shot off and fell 100 meters to the ground. In a pressure vessel, its xylem sap pressure was measured to be 10 atm below ambient pressure. Thus, water in the xylem vessels was under tension of 9 atm (or 9 atm negative pressure) when it was in the pressure vessel and when it was attached to the tree at 100 meters. This negative pressure or tension increased to 18–20 atm in mid-afternoon when the tree was transpiring
