  • Infrared spectra were recorded on either a Perkin-Elmer Model 1420 infrared spectrometer or a Nicolet MXS FT IR as thin films or nujol mulls. NMR spectra were obtained in CCl4, DCCl3, or Me2SO - d6 solutions [(CH3)4 Si internal standard] at 60 MHz with a Varian EM-360 spectrometer. Some of the mass spectra were obtained on a Hitachi Perkin-Elmer RMU-6E spectrometer. All boiling points and melting points are uncorrected and melting points were recorded on a Fisher-Johns melting-point apparatus
  • The Grignard reagents were purchased from either Aldrich Chemical or Alfa Inorganics
  • The borane and DIBAL-H solutions were purchased from Aldrich Chemicals. When DIBAL-H was used in place of borane, the reactions conditions remained constant with the exception that a DIBAL-H solution was added via syringe in place of the borane solution
