• The oxidation ability of ceric hydroxide for the oxidation of two reactive hydroxy compounds, benzyl alcohol and benzoin were investigated in refluxing benzene. It was found that this reagent was not so effective and after 4 hours only 10-15% and 20-25% of benzaldehyde and benzil were isolated respectively. The rest of the reaction mixtures were the unreacted starting materials.
