• For a representative example, the N-formyl product obtained by the action of DMF/POCl3 on 7-chlorotetralone. on deformylation gave 8-chloro-2, 3,4, 5-tetrahydro-1H-2-benzazepin-l-one. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ2.00 (t. 2H), 3.06 (m, 4H), 7.13–7.57 (m, 3H). 6.95 (s. lH); MS (m e): [M+] 195 (100), 197(33), 166(39), 138(16), 103(16), 77(7). The aryl migrated product obtained by Beckmann rearrangement using PPA gave the following data. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 2.41 (m, 4H), 3.05 (t, 2H), 7.06–7.31 (m, 3H); 8.81 (s, 1H); MS(m/e) [M+] 195(36), 197(12), 166(26), 140(100), 77(13)
