- A conventional procedure to form zinc indole salt involved first formation of indole magnesium salt by reaction of indole with ethyl magnesium bromide followed by reaction with etherial zinc chloride solution to convert it to the corresponding zinc salt. A modified procedure was developed by direct addition of the Grignard reagent to the mixture of solid zinc chloride and indole, thus generating the zinc indole salt.
- This is important for the large scale preparation of 2 in the pilot plant where it is easier and safer to handle solid ZnCl2 than highly flammable etherial solution of ZnCl2.
