  • These studies were begun at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford, in 1959, where both authors were Fellows for the academic year, 1958–59. We are indebted to the Social Science Research Council which enabled us to carry out joint research at the University of Minnesota during the summer of 1960 and to the Psychology Department of that university for the use of its facilities.
