• This paper was prepared for presentation at the 22nd annual meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea, held at Varna, Bulgaria, 12–16 September 1989. For reasons beyond the author's control—Sofia airport was closed down—the paper could not be delivered as originally intended. Since this sketch of my view of Old Church Slavonic was first drafted and I began work on a new Handbuch des Altkirchenslavischen (jointly with J. Schacken, Leiden) I have had some second thoughts on a number of points raised here (notably, the Cyrillo‐Methodian pronunciation of CS tjlkt’, dj and the phonemic status of the nasal vowels). My reconsiderations will therefore be reflected in our forthcoming reference work.
