• Target areas were made up of those county fire districts in which subjects from the two classes of living situations (isolated or integrated) would most likely dwell. Where absentee landlord situations existed the rentor of the unit was contacted and served as the respondent.

• Subjects who were listed in the telephone directory were contacted and given preliminary instructions followed by a mail‐out questionnaire while those subjects (about 10%) who did not appear in the telephone directory were sent a survey package consisting of: (a) a letter of introduction, (b) instructions for completion of the questionnaire and (c) mail‐back instructions.
