  • It is interesting to note in this context that a divalent metal ion is indeed somewhat more affected by coulombic or charge effects than the (monovalent) proton. A decrease of the dielectric constant of the solvent as results from the addition of various amounts of 1,4-dioxane to an aqueous solution of the Cu2 + /D,)-ribose 5′-monophosphate (RibMP2-) system leads for the log cn Cu(RibMP) versus, pKH H(RibMP) plot to a slope m = 1.242 + 0.047 (c.f., ref. 33b). In addition, it is amazing to note that the carboxylate charge effect on the proton (0.25 log units; Section 4.1) times the mentioned slope results in an “expected” effect for Cu2+ of 0.31 log units; a value quite close to those given above in the text (Section 4.3). Clearly, for the (higher charged) OMP3- system the corresponding slope might even be somewhat steeper (e.g., close to 1.5, but in any case below 2); (b) Liang, G., Corfu, N., A., Sigel, H., Z.
