  • For reasons which seemed appropriate at the time, Judd was prevailed upon to reduce, in his flattery index, 1 his preferred color shifts to one fifth of the value called for by the experimental data. This brought the arithmetic of the flattery index into line with that of the color-rendering index (which is an index of similarity to daylight-coloration and not a good measure of preferred coloration), but unfortunately rendered the flattery index ineffectual. That is, differences in the value of flattery index of two illuminants are hardly distinguishable from differences in color-rendering index; in a sense, by this five-fold reduction the preference signal was lost in the noise of lamp differences.
