Mer-(+)CD 500-[Co(β-ala)3]·4H2O is deep-violet plate, orthorhombic, space group p212121, a=22.513(3), b=13.001(3), c=5.633(1) Å, Z=4, Dc=1.59 g/cm3. The structure was solved from 1319 Cu-Kα reflections (Fo> 3[sgrave] (Fo)). The final discrepancy factors were R=0.067 for Δ-isomer (R=0.080 for Δ-isomer) with including the anomalous dispersion effect of Co atom (Δf'=-2.464, Δf'-=3.608). The geometrical parameters Co-O 1.910–1.919(9), Co-N 1.941–1.976(10) Å and O-Co-N chelate angles 92.7–95.1(4)° are nearly equal to those found in racemic-mer-[Co(β-ala)3·4H2O (Soling, H. Acta Chem. Scandinavia, A32, 361, 1978.)

The absorption maxima of the s-cis-mer-, u-cis-mer-[Co(edda) (gly)], s-cis-mer-, and u-cis-mer-[Co(edda) (β-ala)] are 542 nm(∊=116), 470(sh), 372(114) for s-cis-mer-gly, 525(94), 370(128) for u-cis-mer-gly, 560(sh), 505(113), 374(122) for s-cis-mer-β-ala, and 590 (sh), 495(83), 368(90) for u-cis-mer-β-ala, respectively. The CD data are as follows for the Δ-isomers: 542nm(Δ=−5.35), 465(+2.17) for s-cis-mer-gly, 543(-2.48), 465(+0.97) for u-cis-mer-gly, 540(-3.67), 477(+2.31) for s-cis-mer-β-ala, and 553(-1.58), 477(+1.09) for u-cis-mer-β-ala complexes
