Johnso School of PublicAffairs, University of Texas); and Boulder, Colorado in May, 1970 (sponsored by the Center for Governmental Research, Washington, D.C.). • The present discussion of post-1971 new public administration literature replicates the author's treatment of the same subject in "Roles Advocated for Administrators by the New Public Administration" appearing in the March 1980 issue of Southern Review of Public Administration. The purpose there is to illustrate the debate spawned by the new public administration during the 1970s. Here the objective is to present a comprehensive (historical) overview of the new pub1ic administration's development. Given the importance of the post-1971 literature to this objective, it is hoped that any breach of grammatical-editorial etiquette committed by this brief repetition will be for given.
