  • Philip , J. The Memoirs of Mrs Matilda Smith, Late of Cape of Good Hope (London, 1824), 115. As this collection of her writings was edited by John Philip in 1822, any possible direct references to the nature of the temptations, as well as acknowledgement that the correspondence was directed to James Read, is piously edited out. However, Philip does claim that he obtained his sources from ‘one well acquainted with the subject, as he was amongst the brethren at Bethelsdorp during the greater part of the residence of Mrs Smith, and had previously enjoyed much of her friendship and correspondence’. The correspondent was first at Graaf Reinet and then Bethelsdorp, making Read the only person still living to fit that description. Further, several additional sources confirm that Read was like a son to the very pious and energetic Mrs Smith who took over the running of Bethelsdorp briefly when British subjects were exiled by the Batavian government
