Civil society and sustainable development in Central AsiaFootnote∗

This paper is based on one commissioned by the Dutch NGO Novib (The Netherlands Organization for International Development and Cooperation based in The Hague) as part of the briefing materials for the participants in the 1995 Nukus Interstate Conference on the Aral Sea. It should be noted that the President of Turkmenistan did not attend the conference and consequently did not sign the final accord.
