  • The curriculum developer will find that the literature on data processing lamentably fails to distinguish the ideas relating to the description of stochastic variables and the ideas relating to sampling variation, but confounds the two in the concept of ‘error’. The literature of pupils’ alternative conceptions shows clearly that if we fail to make the necessary distinctions in our curriculum planning pupils will infallibly reveal to us and themselves the contradictions which are archetypal in any field. The necessary ideas are contained in reference 16, and the four references below, but I am afraid readers may have to create their own synthesis
