  • The cyanobiphenyl dimers (CBnCB) were first synthesized in the late 1980‘s in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tokyo. [Kimura, T.; Toriumi, H.Watanabe, H. In MACRO 88; Kyoto, Japan, 1988]. Then, in 1991, Hiro Toriumi reported a nematic-nematic (N–NX) phase transition in odd-n dimers of the CBnCB series wherein he speculated that the NX phase was biaxial [Toriumi, H. manuscript submitted to Liquid Crystals in 1991]. But the referee wanted evidence of biaxiality and personal reasons delayed his revision of the manuscript and this seminal paper was never published.
