- As suggested in [5] (see footnote 2), and as actually demonstrated in [9] (see figure 3), the dipole interactions lead to an antiparallel side-by-side arrangement of the cyano end-groups with a lateral approach distance of about 3–5 Å, corresponding to a molecular area of about 10 Å2, i.e. half the molecular area of the smectogenic molecules. The electron density in the cyano regions should, therefore, be twice as large in the surrounding aliphatic regions
