  • At 313 nm the absorption coefficients ε are 48·000 and 18·000dm3/(molcm) for trans-4SC and eis-4SC, respectively [12]. Taking a mean e of 35000 dm3/(mol cm) we can calculated that 99 per cent of 313 nm light will be absorbed after it travelled 1–9 × 10–3cm into the sample at a 4SC concentration of 30mmol/dm3 according to Beer's law: log(Io/I) = εcd where Io and I are the intensities of light in front of and behind the sample, c is the concentration of the absorbing species (i.e. 4SC) and d is the optical path length
