  • The West Midlands, one of the Open University's thirteen UK regions, covers the County of Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire, Warwickshire, the former West Midlands County, and most of Staffordshire. It includes the Birmingham/Black Country conurbation and several other cities and towns, but quite large parts of it are rural. About eight per cent of the UK's population live in the region. Many of the services provided for the OU region's seven thousand post foundation undergraduate students and for the five hundred or so part‐time course tutors working with them are co‐ordinated by the full‐time academic and administrative staff at the Open University's regional centre in Birmingham.
