Training for business start‐up in Scotland — the gender dimension

Notes and References

  • We would like to note that this paper does not set out to provide a comprehensive commentary on women in business. For example, the women who have participated in our programmes are predominantly white although they come from very broad socio‐economic backgrounds and have wide ranging educational experiences – from those with no formal qualifications to those with higher degrees. The programmes have also catered primarily for traditional forms of ownership, though partnerships have been formed between course members during or after the programme.
  • A lot of women cannot qualify for the Enterprise Allowance scheme because of the benefit eligibility rule.
  • Some of the increase in the numbers of women who are self employed is no doubt due to these new employment practices. Women are being “hired” on a self employed basis rather than as casual labour or part‐time employees (Hakim, 1988).
  • The earliest documented start up courses, which we have found, were those held in mid‐Wales (1984–5) by the Mid Wales Development Board and in Camden, London (1988–7) by Project Fullemploy (see CRAC, 1986). It was not until 1987 that gender specific enterprise training took place in Scotland.
