Content‐dependent and content‐independent reasons are usually considered in the context of reasons for acting, not, as we have done, in the context of reasons for believing.

Journal of Philosophy of Education , 25 (1) It has to be admitted that there has been a tendency to associate rationality, the ability to reason well, with autonomy, though, along with Dworkin and others, I would oppose this association. • R. M. Hare would argue that in the realm of morality at least there is a logical requirement that we be prepared to eliminate any proper name or definite description that may appear in our reasons. See R. M. Hare (1963) Freedom and Reason pp. 35‐37 (Oxford, Oxford University Press); and R. M. Hare (1955) Universalisability, Proceedings of the Aristotelian Society Vol. 55. If Hare is right, then moral reasoning involves a lack of content‐independent reasons.

  • Perhaps this provides a case for teaching philosophy, that is, for teaching something about the philosophy of religion, moral philosophy, aesthetics, etc. This would not be an attempt to develop general thinking skills, whatever they might be if there are any, but to teach something about the problems and nature of certain areas of inquiry.
