  • Granholm , Niklas and Jonson , Pål . EU-Battlegroups in Context Underlying Dynamics, Military and Political Challenges. FOI-R—1950—SE, March 2006. It does not necessarily express the views of the Government of the Kingdom of Sweden or the Swedish Defence Research Agency. The author wishes to extend his thanks to Dr. John Mackinlay and his family in providing support and inspiration for the writing of this article, as well as to colleagues at RUSI and elsewhere for helpful comments and suggestions.
  • The Transformation of Strategic Affairs, Sir Lawrence Freedman , IISS Adelphi Paper no. 379 One of several points that professor Freedman makes is that it is vital that the deployment of military force is linked to the underlying political goals and that a strategic narrative has to be present both in the regular war and in the now more common irregular wars. In The Utility of Force: The Art of War in the Modern World, (Allen Lane 2005), General Sir Rupert Smith uses his concept of ‘War Amongst the People’ as a case study for the UN and NATO operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina 1994–95.
  • IISS Strategic Survey 2006 166f – 166f . European Defense developments are discussed here. The figure is the result of the recently held Battlegroup Co-ordination Conference (BGCC), held twice yearly. The exact number of Battlegroups committed to the readiness list over time is hard to pin down since the EU offers new ‘slots’ for readiness periods as a ‘sliding window’. Thus, the number of Battlegroups can be said to provide a measurement of how the Battlegroups stand among the EU Member States.

  • The US-European relationship is eloquently discussed in Sir Chris Patten's book, Not Quite the Diplomat Home Truths About World Affairs Penguin 2006 238ff 238ff Lord Patten argues effectively the case that Europe must get serious about its military dimension in order to improve also the broader US-European dialogue.
  • Unblocking EU-NATO Co-operation, Keohane Daniel Centre for European Reform Bulletin, issue 48 2006 June–July and Helsingin Sanomat International Edition, Finnish experts see problems in co-operation between EU and NATO, 25 October 2006. That this problem is now openly discussed by government officials is a sign that there is room for improvement in this field.
