Kalóyeros: FootnoteAn Atlantis in microcosm?

Pages 54-71 | Published online: 29 Jul 2008

  • The name Arc(h)ipelago for the Aegean first appears in Italian documents of the 13th century and continues as the normal term until quite recent times. It was subsequently extended to any island‐studded sea, and thence to any group of islands.
  • I gratefully acknowledge help received from the following: in Cambridge: the staff of the Map Room and Rare Books Room of the University Library; of the Library of Trinity College; and of the Museum of Classical Archaeology; Captain S. W. Roskill, R.N., Professor R. A. Leigh, Dr. Susan Skilliter, and Dr. P. Boyde; in Oxford: Dr. W. O. Hassall (Librarian to the Earl of Leicester, Holkham); in London: Mr. Philip Waley (Dept. of Oriental Manuscripts, The British Library); and in Paris: Mlle Michèle Mittner. An extended version of this study, with more detailed documentation, is to appear (in Greek, with English summary) in Kukλαδιkαì Mελται CCycladic Studies'), Athens.

  • The relative of Ulysses who allowed himself to be taken prisoner by the Trojans, persuaded them to admit the wooden horse into Troy, and let the armed men out at night to capture the city (Vergil, Aeneid ii).
  • Cf. Fischer 1886, p. 60; Kretschmer 1909, p. 37.
  • About 1478 had been published Francesco Berlinghieri's Geographia in terza rima, but this contains only brief descriptions of the major Aegean islands, and others are simply listed, including a ‘Caloiero’ in Lib. III, cap. xxvii; and his maps, one of which covers the western Aegean, are based on the Ptolemaic tradition.
  • From one of the Trinity copies, in which names have been added by hand.
  • Two earlier relevant manuscript works which, however, add nothing to the general tradition, are the ’Imularium illustratum Henrici Martelli Germani’, dated around 1490 (B.L. Add. 15,760), based on Buondelmonti; and the ’hulario de Tuto el Mare de Antonio Millo’ (B.L. Add. 10,365 : c. 1581), based on Bordone.
  • E.g. on the maps of J.B.B.d’ Anville (Paris 1743–80). Kandeliousa is actually the most westerly of the group, and so is misplaced by Piacenza, as also by some earlier maps, e.g. Mercator (1589), Ortelius (1595?), Blaeu (1662), and Cantelli da Vignola (1685). The identification and correct location are, however, confirmed by Dapper and Coronelli (see below) and later cartographers.
  • For his work on Haiti cf. Schefer 1883, pp. xxvii f.
  • Cf. introduction to Boyer 1905.
  • The Turks first began to harass the islands in the early 14th century.
  • The same drawings also appear in an earlier work, by Coronelli and A. Parisotti, Isola di Rodi (1688), where they are inserted (folded between pp. 336 and 337) without comment. Figs. 14 and 15 are in fact from this work.

  • The Encyclopaedia (p. 594) suggests a location on Kandeliousa, following the description of that island by Dapper.

  • Varro . De lingua Latina , vii 22 a common name for the present rocks is in fact ‘Kalôyeroi Aiyaiou’, i.e. ‘of the Aegean’ (less generally ‘of Andros’ or ‘of Psará').
  • Cf. also Berlinghieri (see note 7), Lib. III, cap. xxiii.
