- The name Arc(h)ipelago for the Aegean first appears in Italian documents of the 13th century and continues as the normal term until quite recent times. It was subsequently extended to any island‐studded sea, and thence to any group of islands.

The identification and correct location are, however, confirmed by Dapper and Coronelli (see below) and later cartographers.
