  • The multiplet centred around δ 7.67 is assigned to the C-3 and C-5 protons and the one centred around δ 7.1 assigned to the C-4 proton of the 2-substituted thiophene ring since it is known that protons adjacent to a sulfonyl group are deshielded due to its electron-withdrawing property (Ref. 9). Also, the proton on C-5 will be deshielded because of the sulfur atom of the thiophene ring
