THE DUKE HUMFREY'S LIBRARY PROJECT: USING AN ITEM-BY-ITEM SURVEY TO DEVELOP A CONSERVATION PROGRAMME

  • This project could not have been carried out without the assistance of the John S. Cohen Foundation and the Campaign for Oxford.
  • An IBM compatible pc was used, with Borland's Paradox database software version 3.5 (later updated to version 4).
  • A complex judgement based on such matters as textual, physical, bibliographical or aesthetic importance, rarity, provenance, place in the history of the collections etc.
  • These books make up 18% of the books requiring treatment. Of the other groups books with detached boards (Bu/I, Bu, BI, B/D) make up 13%, those with major damage to text blocks (D major) make up 4%, those with minor damage to textblocks (D minor) make up 28%, those with minor damage to bindings (E) make up 30% and those which do not fall clearly into any one group(?) make up 5%.
