The Committee on Overseas Professional Qualifications has the following terms of reference: (i) To define the terms “interpreter” and “translater” and their relationship with one another and the relationship between “interpreting” and linguistic skills. (ii) To define the range of tasks for which interpreters and translaters are needed in Australia. (iii) To establish the level of skills, education, and for experience required for each of these tasks. (iv) To recommend ways of testing and accrediting/certificating interpreters and translaters competent for each of the tasks identified. (v) To identify appropriate means of providing training for future interpreters and translaters. (vi) To identify appropriate ways of upgrading the skills of existing practitioners where needed.
