Such reform may on other grounds be a good or a bad thing. But both the persistence into our own time of the causes already at work in the larger society which destroyed the educated public of the Scottish Enlightenment, and the effects upon the academic disciplines of the disappearance of that public and its counterparts, real or projected, at various times in England, France, the United States and elsewhere, ensure that the concept of an educated public has no way of taking on life in contemporary society.
